Yesterday, a nice Comcast man (who put waterproof booties over his snowy shoes before coming inside) finally managed to get my 19th century apartment to communicate with the 21st. After living four months without internet at home—probably the longest I’ve gone since 1998—I couldn’t wait to…what? What exactly was I dying to do online?
I knew what I shouldn’t do…
- I shouldn’t cruise Craigslist for cute, antiqued dressers. I couldn’t afford even 50 bucks on a piece of furniture I didn’t really need. Or one I really did need, for that matter.
- I shouldn’t pop onto Facebook to see what was happening. Because nothing was happening—it was Facebook. And I’d already spent too much time on there at work.
- I shouldn’t get onto the Onion personals site and re-re-read the lonely-hearts ad Kim posted on New Year’s Day. What else was there to glean from that, besides some abrasive heartache? (I did briefly think it might be fun to look at the women in his area and see if I could guess who he might hook up with but THAT’S INSANE, RORY, PUT THAT DOWN.)
- I shouldn’t just wander aimlessly around the blogiverse because that’s as couch-potato pathetic as aimlessly flipping channels…
…but maybe I could start blogging again myself? Over the holidays, I had started to feel would-be posts germinate in my head whenever something odd or awesome or sad would happen.
So I consulted the truly gorgeous pressed-paper calendar Agnes had given me for Christmas. It was January 7. What a coincidence. Hadn’t I always, somehow, in the last seven years, started or stopped blogging on January 8?
I decided
to wait until tomorrow then, and sign back up with Typepad. In the meantime, it was time for a dresser expedition on Craiglist.
Hooray!!! You're back! I am so glad. Yours is the only blog I actually used to read regularly. There's one other one I read once a month, but that's it, so you're my connection to the web 2.0 world.
